912 – ‘Nordic Venturer (Tiger)’ – Haugastol – Southern Norway

On the Wednesday 24 March eleven boys and one girl packed their bags and departed on the Bradfield College CCF Ski Expedition. The 3 days of expedition preparation saw the group experiencing the difficulties of cross country skiing, scrambling like bambinos on ice to obtain the necessary skills required. On the first day of the expedition, the group departed into the vastness of the Norwegian mountains with heavy rucksacks, facing the daunting prospects of a twelve kilometre climb. As the night loomed and the temperature dropped, we dug in our tents for protection from the elements. Nevertheless the glowing moon offered the group the incredible opportunity of night skiing, gliding over untouched powder snow under the guidance of the moonlight proved a memorable experience. The next day’s relatively short six kilometre ski route permitted the group to dig and perfect their snow holes over a four hour period. The night was spent in unforeseen comfort as the snow holes provided more insulation than our nylon tents. Eight slumber-filled hours later and the group were back out on skis and summiting a nearby peak before tackling a steep descent back down to the hotel. This resulted in countless falls, aching limbs and bruised bodies before we finally made it back to the hotel and a welcomed sauna! On our last day in Norway we took to the slopes, this time on alpine skis, for a well earned day of gravity induced speed.

This amazing trip was assisted tremendously by logistical support from the MOD and by a grant from the Ulysses Trust. Special thanks go to our dedicated instructors whom ensured we forged a close team spirit and enjoyed an unforgettable experience.
