25th Anniversary Appeal Expedition: Day 62

25-anniversary-expedition-day062Hukejaure to Allakasstugorna. 47km 9 1/2hrs.

Last night I was the only guest at delightful, remote Hukejaure. Tired, but content the lovely couple who have managed the cabin for the last 20 years welcomed me with hot tea and homemade almond cakes. Under a cold, clear sky I watched the best display of the northern lights that I have ever seen. Driven inside by the deep cold I continued to watch them shimmer and dance to an alien music through frost lined windows. Kept warm by the wood stove and a hot chocolate. I slept well. A dreamless, deep sleep. Another long day welcomed me, but today I felt stronger and excited, for today I planned to ski close to the highest peaks in Sweden, along the famous #kungsleden The kind guardians gave a gift as I left, a packed lunch of a precious apple, more delicious almond cakes and licorice toffees. Super charging me with energy to ski through a magnificent valley, flanked by towering peaks on either side… the Kebnekaise, Kaskasatjåkka, Pyramiden, Passustjåkko… Sweden’s biggest peaks watch as I gain the final col and pause to feel the warmth of the sun on my face, and drink in the long view down this spectacular valley. Understandably popular, I’ve seen a dozen skiers this afternoon… that’s a first for my journey! But not busy… well not if you’ve seen the Aiguilles rouges on a sunny snow day. 😂 One final look south along the Kungsleden and I descend north towards my final hut on this famous trail before Abisko.
