25th Anniversary Appeal Expedition: Day 70

The day dawned dull, grey and flat. When I opened the door to the shelter opaque low cloud veiled the southern horizon. Fortunately I was heading north towards a remote fishing village run by Sami, and a narrow strip of blue separating two flat grey worlds hinted at better things… I’d been told this is a main scooter track but again not much traffic today, just one dog sled around midday going in the opposite direction. The terrain rolls on relentlessly, I pass several huge suspension bridges, spanning invisible frozen rivers. They look out of place, purposeless and left behind… anachronistic, and I feel a little sad for them. So since today isn’t too long I sit on one for lunch break. Onwards, onwards… I see an old scooter track weaving in and out of the markers and I understand why… if I was driving a scooter here I might do the same. Steathily, without me noticing the exact moment the low crawling cloud overtakes me. It starts lightly snowing from a translucent sky. The collection of cabins I’d glimpsed are gone, and it takes me several hours to see them again, nestled on the shore of Råstojaure lake. A basic cabin at a Sami inflated price that I wince at but at least the nice man throws in a fish as well
