3 Peaks 2019

HMS WILDFIRE wanted to offer an Adventurous Training (AT) opportunity to members of its ships company where they could be introduced to mountaineering whilst being in a safe environment, and at the same time resulting in a sense of achievement.

The Three Peaks is a widely known challenge on well navigated paths, but with a number of danger points if navigating at night and the driving hours throughout the 24hr period bringing added risk to the team it was decided that we would offer a 4 day AT package. The added benefit of walking during the day allowed for team development and enjoyment of the daylight hours. The 3 Peaks Challenge compromises climbing three of the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales.  The first was Ben Nevis, followed by Scafell Pike and Snowdon.  The physical challenge involved ascending over 3000 m over thee days, and keeping the team together in the event of poor weather conditions.  Summed up by one of the team: “You’ll see this on the mountain, but don’t wear flip-flops!” AB Bruce Shepherd.  The unit members benefited from an increased awareness of planning and staying safe in remote areas.  Being well prepared in the event of separation, injury helped the team appreciate some of the dynamics in mountaineering.  We also had fabulous accommodation over the 4 days including: Bunroy Campsite near Fort William, Carlisle Castle & Capel Curig Camp.

The weather over the Bank Holiday Weekend excelled and it is the first time that I have ever seen views from the tops of all three mountains.  Added to the challenge there were a number of times that the RNR team engaged with the public, including assisted a lone walker with a twisted ankle off of Ben Nevis, meeting some brave un-experienced walkers, and of course engaging with the range of wildlife on the mountain which included a cat, yes a cat on a lead on its way up Scafell Pike.

Everyone enjoyed the team bonding, experience and achievement of completing the three peaks.  Please find some images from our adventure.
