Outcome Measurement Results 2019

We are delighted to announce The Ulysses Trust’s 2019 Outcome Measurement Results. This is the second year of data capture and the results tell us it has been another fantastic year for The Ulysses Trust!

As a result of our survey we are pleased to report the outcomes of our service is as follows:

  • 100% Positive Impact on Individuals
  • 100% Positive Impact on Units
  • 35% Positive Impact on Society
  • 89% Satisfied with our service

We collated the results after asking each unit we supported in 2019 to provide feedback on return from their expedition or exercise. We received a total of 101 responses from the expedition leaders and Commanding Officers of the units that took part in the 105 expeditions we supported in 2019. This represents a response rate of 96% which gives us a robust measure of how effective our support has been.

Below is a breakdown of the results and a selection of the 278 comments we received as a result of our survey.

100% Impact on Individuals

Massive impact on promoting self-confidence, personal development and leadership in our cadets. I would expect them all to go on to reach SNCO rank and together run this contingent for many years. We have numerous examples of young people helped by the trust who have gone on to highly successful service careers.”
Budmouth College Combined Cadet Force |Trans Andes 2019

Our survey said: 67% major positive impact on most of the quoted characteristics and 32% positive impact on the majority of the quoted characteristics and 1% modest positive impact on one or more of the quoted characteristics of leadership, teamwork, confidence, initiative, self-discipline and judgement.

100% Impact on Units

“The use of Adventurous Training as a morale, recruitment and retention tool in the UAS domain in the single most beneficial tool in the arsenal.”
Cambridge UAS | Blue Plunge 2019

Our survey said: 51% major positive impact on all 3 of the quoted areas, 42% positive impact on all 3 of the quoted areas and 7% modest positive impact on 1 or more of the quoted areas of recruitment, retention and morale.

35% Positive Impact to Society

We asked about any potential impact of the expedition on other parts of society. For example, teaching or construction projects or other activities stimulated by the expedition experience such as local voluntary activities. 35% made an observation or provided a positive comment on the impact to other parts of society, 65% did not.

We asked if Ulysses Trust staff provided encouragement, demonstrated flexibility and gave timely responses to questions. Our survey said: 67% strong in all aspects, 18% positive in most aspects, 4% some positive aspects, 10% no specific positive or negative attributes and 1% deficient in one or more areas, although this appears to have been an error.

The Trust’s Chairman, Air Vice-Marshal Nick Kurth said,

“Once again, the annual outcome measurement results showed the positive impact of the activities that the Charity supports. The 2019 numbers were similar to the excellent numbers from 2018 – which is reassuring. I am very grateful to all those who took time to complete the survey, as the results are very important to us when approaching potential benefactors.”

GOC Regional Command Major General Duncan Capps CBE said,

“The financial support granted by The Ulysses Trust to our Cadet Forces to undertake challenging expeditions and adventurous training is vital; often giving many young people opportunities they may never have experienced. As Commander Cadets for the Army, I am an enthusiastic advocate of these adventurous activities and remain hugely grateful to The Ulysses Trust  for their ongoing support and the benefits it delivers for our Cadets!”
